Face Roller or Gua sha- which should you choose?

Well, the answer to that question isn’t as simple as you think. Like we wish there was one product that we could give you saying this was the best. But alas! That’s just simply not possible. There are a few differences along with so many similarities between Gua Sha and Facial rollers. It always comes down to preference and compatibility. The major decision lies in each individual’s preference of either a more convenient way to massage your skin or the desire for a deeper commitment to your daily self-care routine.

  • The first difference is the shape and usage of the tool. One is on a handle, and it can gently roll on the skin. And the other has been shaped to be held in the hand as it massages along the skin’s surface. The facial roller has been reported to be a much more convenient and quick option when it comes to stimulating blood flow and draining puffiness. Gua sha on the other hand, helps you to incorporate some intuitive flow into your daily routine.
  • Most skincare conditions can be stemmed back to a stagnant lymphatic flow. When you slowly get your lymphatic system moving again, you allow potential excess waste lingering in those nodes to flush out. Like when they stay stuck, they eventually create infection and get out in other ways causing little bumps and acne in the skin that are painful. The roller in this case cools the potential infection and gets the system moving. And Gua Sha if you are using regularly prevents it altogether.
  • Is there a better option suited for different skin types (i.e. like facial rolling may help more gently for blemish-prone skin, etc)? Again a very good question. You see, the results have shown deeper conditioning effects with Gua Sha. Now it is not that facial rolling is bad, but the Gua Sha can achieve more of a difference when it is worked to release deep-set wrinkles or stimulate movement with deeper massages. For conditions that may need more repetitions in use, for example, calming the skin from a heat flush or if there is a flared rash, the cooling effect of the roller feels more comfortable to use.
  • Which one is faster? This is a very individual experience-related question. Like every human body is different than others. Something as simple as a DNA code is different in every single human. Some people have a preference for one modality vs the other. The key to showing results faster is how often you use the product in your practice. Once a day for 2-5 minutes can make a difference over time. And it doesn’t matter if you’re not able to commit to that time, you are still going to see some differences in your own time. Just be calm and mindful of your individual journey.

Deciding between jade rollers and gua sha tools is a major question among all of our gorgeous customers. But where there are differences, there’s bound to be a few similarities. The similarities between the two actually are more than the differences. Some major similarities include:

  • Reduce puffiness
  • Aid in lymphatic drainage
  • Reduce toxins
  • Improves your blood circulation and skin tone
  • Increase the skin’s firmness and reduce small wrinkles and expression lines
  • Tighten pores as crystal remains cold even when in contact with skin

The roller might be the “faster” option because of the convenience of the roller is able to glide the stone along the skin to stimulate blood flow and de-puff. But the practice of gua sha is meant to be a much deeper experience than to just stimulate the skin with a cool stone. It’s the next step for someone looking to really commit to their routine, to be able to slow the breath and really pay your skin full attention. It really doesn’t matter what you choose today, the results of more even skin tone and reduced tension are more than likely to be similar. It is your effort that counts the most.
